2.3 Discussion: Describing your own research

Obviously, I don’t know what your research topic is or what you chose to say about it in your elevator pitch, but I hope you found the process of putting together a clear description helpful; hopefully too you will be able to use this next time someone who is unfamiliar with your field asks what you are working on.

Once you have prepared a pitch you can also refine or adapt it to suit new audiences and contexts. Whenever you start working on a new piece of research it is worth spending some time thinking about an elevator pitch. You may also find it helpful to try out your pitch on friends or colleagues and to ask for their suggestions in refining it.
