2. Visualise the Data

Start by visualising the data. For this case we want a scatter plot – a chart where two variables are plotted on the x and y axes and each dot represents one case. Go to the Chart Builder and select Scatter/Dot. From the Variable window drag BODYFAT to the x-axis and ADIPOSITY to the y-axis.

Click OK.

Does there seem to be a relationship between adiposity and body fat measurement? There appears to be a general linear trend: As one increases, so too does the other. The correlation is positive, i.e. the trend slopes from bottom-left to top-right. The cases are clustered pretty closely. Knowing the value of one would enable you to predict fairly well – but not exactly – the value of the other.
