Quantitative Data case study: EAFSO and Project Quincy
1. Introduction: Open Source Databases For Historians
The Early American Foreign Service Database (EAFSD) is a website and online database. Its companion Project Quincy is an open source database application particularly focused on prosopographical and historical networks analysis. Both were created by Jean Bauer in the course of researching her PhD dissertation on the US Foreign Service 1775-1825.
Bauer has also documented (both at the websites and through online essays and blog posts) the evolution of her database and principles of database design for historians. As a result, this is a particularly useful example of data management tools arising directly out of the practical needs of historians' research, as well as opportunities created for data sharing and publication.
