In this module you will be able to find and use a range of materials and activities designed to help you acquire an understanding of Palaeography and medieval manuscripts, as well as transcription practice. The variety of tools and resources available will provide you with the means to:
- Read and transcribe a range of scripts from different periods.
- Understand the nature of the medieval manuscript.
- Assign a date to manuscripts and diplomas on the basis of both their content and their script.
- Identify a variety of types of books and diplomas.

In the next section we will look at some of the basic techniques and things to be aware of when transcribing old texts. This tutorial makes use of an interactive transcription tool to help you learn the skills of a paleographer and so we will also introduce you to the conventions we will be using here.
